What's a Kitchen Counter to Do?

What an incredible weekend. We had a thunderstorm on the Fourth...God's very own fireworks...but the rest of the weekend we weeded and planted and tended to the garden.

And added a few finishing touches to the kitchen. Now what to put in the kitchen...on the new counter tops...

I like adding depth with layers of display items. Adding a plate or a platter in the back with a smaller item staggered in front gives the eye somewhere to dance.

I also like fruit and vegetables (this is a kitchen after all...maybe a little cooking goes on here).

Display your kitchen staples in glass jars. The texture of rice or oatmeal makes a beautiful statement in a glass jar on a counter top.

Don't forget about these "humble jars" that we posted about here. These are the best! (we even added coffee filters to one)!

Well...off to more gardening...

...does anyone have any tips for planting hollyhocks?

Great looking kitchen! We are in the midst of a reno as well and I'm thinking about accent pieces to place once the dust clears.

Hollyhocks like sunshine and do well almost anywhere. They reseed themselves from year to year. Mine are just starting to bloom.

I have a huge collection of vintage swizzle sticks in one of those humble jars...although I like the look of the flour and using the teacup as a scoop.......I think I need to pick up a few more jars for impact.

Beautiful! Like everyone else - love those bee hive jars! I also love the humble jars, too. They are so cheap and I love that they are made in USA!

Love your kitchen decor.

As far as hollyhocks, make sure you stake them up when they get tall enough. Once they are established they are very hard to get rid of so make sure you plant them where you want them to be forever!

God bless.

Your humble jars are beautiful in the simple statement about the staples in life and just that little touch nicer for the pretty cups to scoop with.

I do something a little different with my hollyhocks and always have good luck. I plant them in late summer, so they grown into small plants before the first freeze. The next spring, they come up again and are more hardy because they've had a head start.

My original seeds were from my grandmother's huge, old plants, and I think that helps. Also, I live in zone 7, which makes a difference.

Good luck!
