Mantel 101...

Thursday, June 19
Posted by kari and kijsa

SO we checked it out...by definition alone, both mantle and mantel are correct, but the editors we know say mantel is primarily used...either way- it is a great place to show off some stuff...

...and we can't wait to see everyone's stuff!!!

To begin decorating your mantel, clean everything off to get a fresh perspective. Imagine creating a composition, as in a work of art. If there are permanent fixtures, those will create the frame or base for your composition If your items are similar in size, create platforms to vary the heights using stands, old books, boxes, or appropriate compliments. Create levels to train the eye up and then down. Asymmetrical compositions take a little more trial and error than straight symmetry, but can be quite striking and beautiful. the eye can also be trained in a round composition, another take on symmetry

Like an artist, also remember contrast, dark tones and light tones, and shading...translation: compliment your color scheme, but don't let it fade into the background, have weight in color to balance, and add light, either through tone or shine, to add a finishing touch.

This is a mantel in Kijsa's house...a fairly straight forward, symmetrical look...the two vintage fixtures came with the house, and dictated a symmetrical arrangement. A drawing she did of her daughter hangs over a favorite wedding gift from an Aunt, while two rusty garden decor flowers perch on either side...

...the mantel is original to the house, but the front applique has inspired other ideas...this is an easy addition to spruce up a plain surround. Using unfinished wood, reproduction resin, or great yard sale treasures, adhere to your surface, then paint the same as the basecoat.

Another take, here is the same mantel at Christmas...(we are so excited-this one will be featured in the upcoming BH&G"S Christmas Ideas, but with a better photo of course, LOL!)...

We love asymetrical arrangements as well, collections, momentos...frames propped right up on the mantel...check out these ideas...or more ideas...

And don't forget that you can use your mantel in so many other ways...here is an old mantle used as a headboard...

We can't wait to see everyone's mantle...just add your link below to join the party!

Have a blessed and wonderful day!

smiles, kari & kijsa

First, let me say, that I am just loving your blog. My pictures feature "the lack, thereof." Hope you don't mind me bending the rules a little! LOL! Both of these mantels are beautiful on your post! But the second one I absolutely adore! The sketch, fixtures, and iron flowers are amazing! Congrats on the magazine publishing! Can't wait to see your blog at Christmas!

I'm embarrassed to show my mantle. It looks great at Christmas, but it is definitely something I've struggled with in this house. Pure 70's. All brick with a mantle that just extends across. Yuck.

Yours? Simply fabulous!

What wonderful ideas! I keep my own mantle very plain and simple. A photo my husband took looking down a waterfall in the Middle East hangs on the wall above our mantle. I had it super enlarged and framed. On the mantle itself I merely have a pot of orchids and a framed piece of our last initial I did in Assissi embroidery style.

Wonderful! I always love your tidbits. My folks still reside in the same house that I grew up with. They have a wood-burning fireplace and my mom always has it decorated beautifully at Christmas time.

In the 7 places that I have resided as an adult, I have only had 2 fireplaces and neither was wood-burning. I love mantels! In California, fireplaces are hit or miss in the older models.

Thanks for sharing, KJ
