What's That Under-used, Potentially Fabulous, Great-Idea-Waiting-To-Happen Space Under Your Stairs To Do?
Wednesday, May 7
In the search to utilize every bit of storage space...every nook and cranny that a person could possibly think of using to create organization out of chaos...enter the space under the stairs...it is underused...it has so much potential...it has the capability to be an incredible project...
So we researched...and we looked...and came up with these ideas:
(1) Create drawers in the stairs. We recently found an article that discussed actually creating drawers out of each individual drawer. The only space they take up is the space directly under each tread. This would be a great option for stairs that are not used so much (ie basement stairs).
(2) Create a wine cellar. Add built-ins and inserts to create a place to store your finest vintage.
(3) Create a home office. Add bulletin boards and a desk for the perfect place to pay bills or write letters. And when you are done...simply close the door to hide that mail you might have let stack up (not that we would know anything about stuff like that).
Now research is great...but why spend too much time when we have all of you...our friends in blogland...have you done anything special with your space under your stairs. We would LOVE to post pictures if anyone has an incredible idea we would like to share....so please help us solve one of the pressing questions of the universe...."What's That Under-used, Potentially Fabulous, Great-Idea-Waiting-To-Happen Space Under Your Stairs To Do?"
Have a blessed and wonderful day!

My son is itching to do something with the space under his stairs. I think he wants to put in something like a cabinet - with shelves for storing games, but with a door you can close.

here's a couple of uses...
our under stairs space is only accessable on the way down to our unfinished basement, so my husband nailed some boards to the bottom of the steps (basement side) extending the boards out 5 inches or so to create shelves as you walk down. friends of ours were able to create a little powder room. their older home didn't have a 1st floor bathroom, and they were able to tuck a tiny sink and toilet under the stairs. and, because you asked....there is a beautiful home in our neighboorhood with a very large grand foyer which has a large wrap around staircase with an opening up to the second and third floor. they had a builder make a special closet under the staircase which houses their 15' fully decorated christmas tree. the tree is on a rolling base, it rolls out for the holidays into the foyer, and rolls back in for the rest of the year. (like i said...you asked!!!)

Oh how I wish I had a beautiful staircase like the one in that picture! I do have a staircase, but it's pretty boring. The accessible side of the stairs is along a hallway that runs between my two youngest kids rooms. I've been wanting to cut into the wall and make a bookshelf to hold the books that they share.

What a great idea. I love the raised paneling in this pic. I also like the idea of drawers in the stairs...hmmm...something to consider as we are finishing the basement.
Thanks! - May 7, 2008 1:05 PM

Great ideas girls! Under my stairs are the stairs to the basement (or dungeon). Under those those not particularly nice stairs is a place for assorted stuff including, but not limited to, cat carriers!!

We have a pantry under the stairs. I posted photos at http://southernseven.blogspot.com/2008/04/my-pantry.html showing it after I organized it. It is only about 5'3" high but has excellent space for a walk in pantry with the addition of shelves along the walls.

Girls, do you read minds? I was just telling Karrie that I needed some fabulous ideas for the blank wall that you see from our kitchen (on the other side of that wall is the staircase). Thanks for making the wheels turn..........

You girls have some wonderful ideas. All we use our under the stairs space for is storing some of my hubbies fishing equipment. Some day however we plan on putting in a small fridge for the bar we plan on building.

I've always liked the idea of having a table with an old fashioned phone on it under the stairs. Put a chair by it too so you can sit and chat to your heart's content!

My under-stairs space is in a split entry so I use it for readily accessible storage of Christmas items. (It is also access to the fuel oil tank.)

This is a great idea. The space we use under the stairs are the basement ones on the other side of the finished side, we use it for Christmas decoration. I never thought of using the space under the stairwell leading upstairs. What a great thought. Karen

Well, if I had stairs, and if I had kids, I would think creating a secret hidey hole for them under there would be an excellent idea. Or perhaps id make a secret room just for myself.

The previous owners used the space under the stairs in the basement as a little cubby hole for the kids. It has little shelves and carpeting in it. It'll be great when J gets older--he'll love his "secret" hide out!

Our space under the stairs is a closet. There's a wall of shelves where we store games and sports equipment, a space for luggage, and a table with shelves on which I place fragile seasonal decorations. One wall has hooks for our hat collection. My husband built a shelf near the low ceiling above the luggage section where I store rolls of wrapping paper.

Sadly, I don't have stairs of any kind—not even a front porch. Here in overcast So. California, we are situated in the foothills but on a cement slab. IF I had a cubby under some stairs, I would probably turn it into a "secret place" or a "prayer closet" just to get away with God. That would be so cool!
When I was a kid, I had an office on the floor of my closet. I used the case of an old record player for my desk and I had a typewrite on top of it. There was a miniature cupboard against the wall that held all of my secret stuff, including letters from friends. I even burned a mini oil lamp in there. It probably wasn't safe, although I was very careful. The ambiance in my closet was wonderful.
Inspired and looking for stairs,

I know, I know...I'm saying it yet again...I'm playing "catch up" with my blog reading. It happens more often than I ever thought possible. But I'm not complaining though. My life is full and happy, so sometimes I get behind.
It's always fun to visit you....so many many good ideas.
