Old Linens...New Look

Not too long ago, we inherited several linen pieces from our grandmother...beautiful napkins, linen hand towels, embroidered, stitched...stained...what!
Yes..stained, and try every remedy that we may..these stains were more stubborn than we are ( a feat in and of itself our mother might say!)
Never fear...we would master those stains yet! Fearlessly striding forth...paintbrush in hand..we took them on!!
(Okay, so maybe the fearless part was a bit much, but there was a paintbrush involved!)
On the first one (above), the edging was stained and a bit misshapen...we painted the band with black fabric paint (we recommend DecoArt's So Soft) When dry, we added a simple bow through the openwork stitching and pinned on a vintage brooch. A quick fix produced a boutique look...and the paint is wonderfully washable as well!
The second hand towel needed a bit more attention, so we readied our brushes and palette with more color.
Scattering polka dots across the background helped disguise many of the rust spots in different areas, then topping the border off with a green on green stripe added interest.
To finish it off, we painted an artichoke in the middle. Any image would do here...another great place for the fabric transferr project found above. Adding ribbon, buttons, appliques or more vintage jewelry would be a great touch as well!
So we saved a bit of our history, recycled some linens, and gained a few fabulous towels in the process!

Thats wonderful...what a great idea! I think I'd be too timid...maybe...but I guess if it meant painting it so I could display it instead of tucking it away then I'd go for it!!

How wonderful is this! Such a fabulous idea...to even THINK of fabric paint is awesome to me because I don't know how to paint. I am, as always, in awe of your talents.
The little black and white border I LOVE putting on my photos (could it be because it reminds me of my love affair with Mackenzie-Childs??) comes from photoscape.com. It is such a fun program, it's free and you have quite a choice of things to do to enhance your photos. Well, YOU don't really need it as you are as good at picture taking as you are in all you do. I, on the other hand, need all the help I can get!!

This is a fabulous idea! I have many of my hubby's 97 yr old grandmother's linens (some were HER mother's, so these are REALLY OLD linens)! But with the linens' age came many spots, but mostly holes and worn areas. But I'm just so afraid to touch them! I give you lots of credit for tackling your linens and making them even more beautiful! Call me chicken! lol

What a beautiful and sweet project. I have a great stain recipe for future linens. 1 cup biz powder colorsafe bleach, 1 cup powder dish detergent, mix in a 5 gal bucket of the hottest tap water, soak till cool (the water usually turns brown) Some of my inherited "tan" linens were actually white.

You make it look so simple...I am almost tempted to try my hand at painting...but I don't think I'd be salvaging anything by putting the brush in my hand! What a great idea though.

Those are really beautiful and what a great way to refurbish something sort of ruined and make it look brand new and fabulous!! I inherited a bunch of old hankerchiefs from my grandmother (maybe 30-40 of them) and my husand helped me flatten them between glass and then frame them - I framed 8 of them and hung them in a collection on the a wall in my house - they are beautiful. Those linens have been beautifully altered for another go at life. If, however, you ever want to try to get stains out of old fabric again you should try soaking them in biz. I have found antique pillowcases at estate sales that were absolutely brown and the Biz took the stains out with just a few soakings. Thanks for the tips on fabric painting:>)

if folks are too timid to try painting...how about an applique of some sort and perhaps a few tiny ones tossed about..similar to the dots? a band of ribbon on the edge instead of the paint too? just ta though as soome sound like they may try...if only it didn't seem too much like painting..... -

Love your ideas! Can you PLEASE link to the kind of photo transfer paper you use? The stuff I bought prints a bright white background and doesn't look painted on at all, looks like it should go on a 1970's t shirt or something!
Is there a kind of paper that allows you to iron on the image only without the background, almost like art transfer tracing paper?
